Gas discharge tubes dissipate voltage transients through a contained plasma gas. They have high insulation resistance plus low capacitance and leakage to ensure minimal effect on normal operation of equipment.

Littelfuse devices offer a small footprint and are available in leaded and surface mount configurations, with high surge handling capability. We offer both low surge GDTs and medium surge GDTs. Their fast response to transient over-voltage events, and ability to dissipate large amounts of energy, translates into reduced risk of equipment damage. The amount of energy dispersed by gas discharge tubes makes them a good choice for lightning surge protection, particularly for telecomm equipment located in outdoor structures.

The Transient Voltage Suppressor diode (also known as a TVS Diode) is a protection diode designed to protect electronic circuits against transients and overvoltage threats such as EFT (electrically fast transients) and ESD (electro-static discharge). TVS Diodes are silicon avalanche devices typically chosen for their fast response time (low clamping voltage), lower capacitance and low leakage current. Littelfuse TVS diodes are available in both uni-directional (uni-polar) or bi-directional (bi-polar) diode circuit configurations.

This can be a complex task as electronic components are increasingly sensitive to stray electrical transients. The designer must define the types of transient threats and determine what applications are needed while meeting the product agency norms and standards.

Varistors are increasingly used as the front-line solution for transient surge protection. Littelfuse provides expertise to the designer and offers the broadest range of circuit protection technologies to choose from.

Littelfuse varistors are available in a variety of forms to serve a wide range of applications. Options include ultra small surface mount multi-layer suppressor (MLV) devices for small electronics applications, and traditional mid-range metal oxide varistors (MOVs) and axial metal oxide varistors for protection of small machinery, power sources and components. Littelfuse also offers larger terminal mount MOVs for industrial applications.

Littelfuse TVS Diode Arrays (SPA® silicon protection arrays) are designed to protect electronics from very fast and often damaging voltage transients, such as lightning and electrostatic discharge (ESD). They offer an ideal protection solution for I/O interfaces and digital and analog signal lines, in computer and consumer portable electronics markets.

Littelfuse tvs diode arrays are available in a range of packaging configurations including DIP, SOIC, MSOP, SOT23, SOT143, SC70, SOT5x3, SOT953, µDFN, SOD723, and flipchip.

Littelfuse TVS Diode Arrays offer a high level of protection (up to 30kV per IEC 61000-4-2) with very low capacitance, leakage current and clamp voltage. For more robust applications, SP03-xx and SP30xx devices are available for EFT and Lightning transient threats per IEC 61000-4-4/5.

The most common cause is friction between two dissimilar materials, causing a buildup of electric charges on their surfaces. Typically, one of the surfaces is the human body, and it is not uncommon for this static charge to reach a potential as high as 15,000 volts. At 6,000 static volts, an ESD event will be painful to a person. Lower voltage discharges may go unnoticed, but can still cause catastrophic damage to electronic components and circuits.
